Lakeside Surprise

Late one evening, Mike slid into the driver’s seat of Emma’s car with an eager smile. He said he had a surprise: a secret spot by the lakeside. Emma’s heart fluttered at the idea of an impromptu adventure – maybe a picnic blanket, wine, romance under the stars.

The headlights carved tunnels through towering pines. Emma leaned forward, trying to pinpoint the winding turns on the SatNav. A knot of unease tightened in her stomach.

When they finally arrived, Mike turned off the engine, and silence descended. He opened the boot with deliberate slowness, and Emma’s smile wavered when she saw a heavy canvas bag. The air grew cold as she realized he’d chosen this secluded spot for more than romance. Something in Mike’s eyes – once warm – had gone to ice.

Mike stepped forward, unzipping the bag. Her mind raced: What now? He pulled out a length of rope, tossing it onto the gravel.

Summoning every ounce of courage, Emma wrenched the car door open. The cold night slapped her face as she sprinted, shoes slipping on damp grass. Behind her, Mike’s shout cracked through the air, but Emma didn’t look back – running until her lungs burned.

In the distance, she spotted a faint glow: the lights of an oncoming car, salvation on the lonely highway. She raised an arm, voice cracking as she called out. The driver saw her too late: tyres screeched, followed by the dull thud of metal against body.

Mike returned to Emma’s car and drove away.
